School Description: The Chapin School, an independent K–12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as an Upper School Science Teacher and Upper School Advisor for Grades 8–12, with particular focus on teaching Biology and either Chemistry or 8th grade science.  8th Science at Chapin is a project-based course focused on Scientific Method and Inquiry that currently introduces Physics and Chemistry.

Job Overview  

The Upper School Science Teacher will teach four sections of science, likely in the fields of Biology and Chemistry or 8th grade Science, and will serve as an Upper School advisor. 

Chapin’s Upper School Science program blends traditional science content and skill acquisition with a deep focus on engaging students to think of themselves as scientists, willing and able to pursue their ideas to build a better world through scientific research and discovery. The Science Department engages in ongoing curricular and pedagogical work that recognizes the inquiring scientist in every student and relies upon respectful, collaborative relationships with both colleagues and students. The Department is proud of its wide array of advanced curricular offerings, which include Molecular Genetics, Principles of Engineering, Fly Lab Research in Molecular Biology (in partnership with Stan-X), and electives in forensic science, pharmacology, and public health.

Qualifications

Required 

• Bachelor’s Degree

• 2 years experience in science instruction or equivalent

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues

• Strong content fluency in Biology and/or Chemistry   

Preferred 

• Advanced degree in the sciences or science education

• Experience teaching science or a STEM-related subject at the high school level

• Lab research experience or ability to teach advanced-level sciences

• Experience working with or teaching a laboratory science using Drosophila as a model organism

Compensation: The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience, the range is $67,000-$120,000
