Job Overview  

The Lower School Head Teacher (grades K–3) creates and maintains a warm and inclusive learning environment conducive to students' intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. Reporting to the Head of Lower School, this individual is committed to working creatively, flexibly, and closely with the grade team, co-curricular teachers, Learning Resources, and School Counselor to ensure student success. This community member participates fully in the life of the Lower School and Chapin.

Chapin’s Lower School Head Teacher will be:

A lead teacher who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development who

  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to prepare, implement, and document appropriate lesson plans in Social Studies, Literacy, and Math that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students

  • Is a reflective practitioner who designs and implements high-quality, engaging learning experiences built around intellectual exploration and joyful discovery

  • Uses diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment data to inform teaching and learning and set individual student goals

A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history who

  • Understands and appreciates the Lower School learner within the context of early childhood development

  • Demonstrates effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning needs, and interests

  • Employs research-based strategies to reach all students through differentiated approaches, mindful of students’ interests, learning needs and wellbeing

An educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by

  • Cultivating an inclusive classroom that promotes diverse points of view and constructive dialogue through a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Developing and maintaining a joyful, productive and consistent learning environment, building relationships with students while recognizing the hands-on nature of childhood learning

  • Mentoring and supervising an associate teacher 

A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning who

  • Works collaboratively and generously with colleagues on the grade team and across the Lower School

  • Embraces opportunities to work with co-curricular teachers on interdisciplinary units of study that allow students to draw meaningful connections across subjects

  • Communicates with families both formally and informally about curriculum, school life, and each child’s personal journey

  • Enthusiastically approaches their work and demonstrates strong organizational skills, flexibility, and follow-through on assignments 

Qualifications

Required 

  • Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree Preferred

  • Minimum two years of Lead Teaching Experience in an elementary classroom

  • Commitment to DEIB/Culturally Responsive Practice

Preferred 

  • Demonstrate a passion for and recognize the importance of an all-girls setting

  • Experience with Responsive Classroom

  • Experience working with an inquiry-based math program, a robust literacy program, and an integrated social studies curriculum

  • Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are of special interest as our students learn Spanish starting in Kindergarten

  • Have facility with digital tools such as Seesaw, Canvas, and the Google Suite for Education 

 

Compensation: The compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience; the range is $69,000-$130,000
